Convention Volunteers

Phoenix Comicon is looking for volunteers!  Volunteering is great way to earn your membership pass and support the convention.  There are many opportunities available for anyone interested in volunteering with the convention.

2010 Volunteer Opportunities

Here is a list of some of the opportunities available:

All volunteers receive a discounted rate of $20 for their ticket.   The volunteer schedule will be posted at the end of April.  A link will be provided to volunteers to purchase their ticket at this special price after volunteer shifts have been scheduled. After the volunteer has completed their 12 hours the cost of the membership pass will be refunded.  Volunteers will need to purchase the ticket prior to the convention.

2010 Volunteer Benefits

After volunteers complete 12 hours of volunteering during the convention they receive the following:

After volunteers complete 8 hours of volunteering during the convention they receive the following:

After volunteers complete 4 hours of volunteering during the convention they receive the following:

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the Volunteer Registration Form. All volunteers must complete the Volunteer Waiver and bring it to the Volunteer Desk when checking in for their shift. A Parental Consent Form is included in the above document and is required for all volunteers under 18.

Volunteers Department

#V-1 : Volunteer Coordinator (several positions)
Works with the Volunteer Director to complete the following tasks:
Monitors Volunteer email account
Convention Volunteer recruitment
Creating Volunteer schedule during convention
Plan events for Volunteers

Operations Department

#O-1 : Hospitality Chef
Primary on creating menu and preparing food for the Hospitality Suite.
Assist with any food vendors and purchasing of products for Hospitality Suite.
Assist with creating menu.

#0-2 : Hospitality Host
Greet guests and staff as they come into suite.
Act as access control for the suite.
Make sure suite is presentable at all times.
Be familiar with all guests and core staff attending the convention.

#0-3 : Snack Lounge Host
Greet volunteers and staff as they come into suite.
Act as access control for the suite.
Make sure suite is presentable at all times.
Be familiar with all guests and core staff attending the convention.

#0-4 : Registration Station Coordinator (9) -
Operate at door sales registration station area.

#0-5 : Security Volunteers
We are looking for a few good women and men to join our amazing security team. Phoenix Comicon Security Roamers walk throughout their assigned areas during the convention watching out for the welfare and safety of all of our guests, vendors, staff, attendees, and volunteers. Roamers make sure that convention and weapons policies are being followed; assist staff, guests, and vendors with any security-related issues; locate missing children/parents; and respond to medical emergencies. The Phoenix Comicon Security Department is also responsible for peace bonding props/weapons and assisting with VIP escorts to and from the convention center and hotel. Security volunteers are provided with radios and security t-shirts while they are volunteering.

Security volunteers experience a unique, insiders perspective during the convention. Security volunteer applicants must be over 21 as of 5/27/09. Security experience and/or CPR/First Aid certification a plus.

Programming Department

#P-1 : Director of Comic Book Programming
Administer the planning and operation of the Comic Book Programming department. Oversee the Comic book Programming department staff in pre-convention planning and tasks. Manage the Comic Book Programming department strategy, select and train Department staff, allocate budgets to meet department needs. During the convention, manage the department staff to accomplish convention tasks and ensure smooth operations for Comic Book Programming.

Tasks:-Selecting, training and supervising staff\volunteers
-Shaping the Convention goals for the department (with Senior Directors and Convention Director)
-Contributing to the strategic goals for the department
-Managing Department budget
-Guiding and managing pre-Convention planning and activities for their Departments within the department
-Managing the execution of the Convention plan for the Department

#P-2 : Manager of Local Guest Based Programming
Support Comic Book Programming that involves local guests from Phoenix and surrounding areas. With the support of Directors or Senior Directors, work on pre-convention planning and tasks including contributing to department and Department strategy, selecting and training staff, allocating budgets to meet Department needs, and planning all aspects of convention related to Comic Book Programming that involves local guests. During the convention, direct staff and volunteers in executing convention tasks and support Directors and Senior Directors in ensuring smooth operation within Comic Book Programming related to local guests.

Responsiblities:-Select, training and managing staff\volunteers
-Assist in developing Convention goals for the Department
-Contribute to the strategic goals for the department
-Manage Department budget
-Work with Directors and Senior Directors to develop and execute pre-Convention planning and activities for their Departments within the department
-Manage Department staff during the Convention

Tasks:-Understand what Comic Book fans want to see and do and plan engaging events and activities to ensure a memorable and fun experience
-Identify and recommend guests who will support programming goals and attract attendees
-With approval of Directors, invite guests
-Coordinate planning of events and panels that include local guests
-Manage the execution of events and panels that involve local guests

#P-3 : Manager of Fan Based Comic Book Programming
Support Comic Book Programming not presented by professionals in the Comics Industry. With the support of Directors or Senior Directors, work on pre-convention planning and tasks including contributing to department and Department strategy, selecting and training staff, allocating budgets to meet Department needs, and planning all aspects of convention related to fan based Comic Book Programming. During the convention, direct staff and volunteers in executing convention tasks and support Directors and Senior Directors in ensuring smooth operation within Comic Book Programming presented by fans or non-industry professionals.

Responsiblities:-Select, training and managing staff\volunteers
-Assist in developing Convention goals for the Department
-Contribute to the strategic goals for the department
-Manage Department budget
-Work with Directors and Senior Directors to develop and execute pre-Convention planning and activities for their Departments within the department
-Manage Department staff during the Convention

Tasks:-Understand what Comic Book fans want to see and do and plan engaging events and activities to ensure a memorable and fun experience
-Identify resources for creating or presenting panels and events
-Coordinate planning of events and panels
-Manage the execution of events and panels

#P-4 : Coordinators
Coordinators manage specific activities and events that require advanced planning and additional work to put together. They are responsible for executing plans developed by Managers, Directors or Senior Directors and may supervise other volunteers in executing those plans.

Tasks:-Work with the mangers and directors to plan out events\activities
-Carry out the plans for the activities and events
-Oversee other volunteers as needed

Events we're looking for coordinators for:

  • Live Art Area
  • Southwest Quickdraw sketchoffs
  • Drink and Draws
  • Comic book soundtrack

#P-5 : McFarlane Phoenix Comicon Film Challenge Coordinator
The goal of this track is to create a new event to support our Film and Television programming. The event will focus on working with film makers and film schools to develop a program where they create original films to debut at Phoenix Comicon. This track will complement several other branches including a film festival track where we will be seeking out films not specifically made for Phoenix Comicon, specialty film festivals built through partnerships with other companies and a panel track where professionals from film and television speak.

#P-6 : Costuming Staff
In the second year of the Costuming track, the track is expanding! We are looking for dedicated staff members to assist with Costuming panels, guests, and events. Costuming events include the Masquerade Costume Contest, a costume dance/party, and 1-2 more costume contests (with details to be announced at a later date). Whether you are a costumer or not, if you're interested in helping the costuming community in Arizona grow, we'll find a position for you! #M-1 : Internet Manager
Seeking a social media and web guru who can oversee and maintain the updates to our social, digital media, and web sites through a team of dedicated web and forum coordinators. Supports Communications in spreading the words in our guests and programming, supports Community Outreach and Street on local events, and supports the Marketing Manager by preserving our branding through our website. Familiarity with Content Management Systems preferred, but can train. A jack-of-all-trades personality would be awesome.

#M-2 : Art Manager
Seeking an individual who can manage a team of graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, and production staff through the entire creative process; researching our brand and the project's concept, planning a design, coordinating the staff to create the material, and seeing it through production. This position will be working closely with the Marketing Director to conceptualize several creative solutions for PCC's needs. A jack-of-all-trades knowledge-base is preferred, as your team will assist the productivity of the Internet, Communications, and Public Outreach Teams. General knowledge of page layout, typography, color theory, and visual arts. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator & Dreamweaver).

#M-2.1 : Graphic Designers (multiple positions)
Seeking individuals who can preserve the Phoenix Comicon brand and implement their own design prowess while creating fliers, newsletters, webmails, web graphics, packets & brochures, print ads, and more. Willingness to research the audience the project is targeting- PCC covers multiple genres, and different design solutions are needed in different situations. Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator & Dreamweaver). If you are only familiar with part of the Creative Suite, I'd still love to see what you can do.

#M-3 : Photographers (multiple positions)
Seeking talented photographers who can assist the Street Team and Community Outreach Team by covering local events that PCC will be attending. Work with the Art Manager to coordinate our digital photo collection. Work with other photographers to make sure we have full coverage of Phoenix Comicon 2010 in May, from guests, to attendees, to programming, to events, to music, to the area, and more. I can provide more details on our strategy for PCC 2010.

#M-4 : Public Relations Specialists (multiple positions)
Develop relationships with media outlets of a specific type (radio, print, TV, web) to gain coverage of the Phoenix Comicon. Will implement the marketing message and work at scheduling interviews with our guests to the media outlets. Onsite at the convention tasks will include scheduling onsite interviews with guests and various media outlets.

#M-5 : Community Outreach Coordinators (multiple positions)
Contribute to our local community as a community outreach liaison. We're looking for individuals who can create relationships with local businesses, schools, libraries, and other organizations in order to build partnerships, organize speakers and outreach activities, and generally support the growth of our local arts, events, conventions, and culture.

#M-6 : Street Team Member (In-State and Out-of-State)
Find and provide fliers and other materials to stores. Check weekly or bi-weekly to see if fliers need to be restocked. Work with Street Team Manager to expand our street presence. Optionally, attend outreach events and act as the face of PCC, with information, hand-outs, and give-aways.

We are also seeking Street Team members in other cities.

  • talking about our events and programming for 2010,
  • and giving away prizes to those who attend. (Provided by Bookmans, Frazetta Comics, and McFarlane Toys!)

We're meeting Thursday January 28th at 6 PM in room 160-161 of the Phoenix Convention Center South Building, located at the SE corner of Washington and 3rd Street, downtown Phoenix. At the conclusion of our Kickoff Event we'll be conducting a walk through of the Phoenix Convention Center.

PCC South 2The Phoenix Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency are our new homes beginning this year and we're totally stoked to be here and want to show it off.  Come with us and hear about some of our plans for 2010.
