Ethan Van Sciver

Ethan Van SciverEthan Van Sciver is an American comic book artist, best known for illustrating a number of titles including Green Lantern, Superman/Batman, New X-Men, and currently, The Flash: Rebirth. He is known for having consistently detailed rendering in his work.

Van Sciver cites Chris Claremont and Jon Bogdanove's "Fantastic Four vs. X-Men" as a strong influence, telling a group of fans at Comic-Con International that "I'm trying in my own comics to recreate the feeling I got from that four-issue miniseries."

Many of Van Sciver's most notable works have been produced in collaboration with writer Geoff Johns. Van Sciver feels he may have had a "bad influence" on the writer, working with him early on on the superhero-horror one-shot The Flash: Iron Heights. The artist described his approach on the issue as "taking well known, maybe well worn superhero concepts, make them scary, make them upsetting in some way."

For Marvel, Van Sciver produced several issues of Grant Morrison's New X-Men, starting as a two-issues-per-year fill-in artist for regular series artist Frank Quitely.

In 2004, Johns and Van Sciver brought Hal Jordan back to the DC Universe as Earth's main Green Lantern officer in the six-issue miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth, before the duo re-launched the Green Lantern title itself with a new volume. Van Sciver's work on the Green Lantern mythos helped explain and retcon many elements of the Green Lantern story which some fans and writers found nonsensical, such as the reasons of the power rings uselessness against the color yellow, and Hal Jordan's transformation into thesupervillain Parallax.

In 2007, Johns, Van Sciver, Dave Gibbons and Ivan Reis produced the eleven-issue Sinestro Corps War across the two Green Lanternmonthly titles, the second part of a mooted trilogy of Green Lantern tales. This story launched the Sinestro Corps, the antithesis of the Green Lantern Corps, led by rogue Green Lantern Sinestro and his Qwardian yellow power ring. The series set the stage for a complete overhaul of the Lantern Corps, and introduced the emotional spectrum of power which provides energy to many different color variations of power rings.

In 2008, Van Sciver was the guest artist on an issue of Justice League of America (vol. 2) #20 (June 2008). Van Sciver's 2009 work includes the six-issue mini-series The Flash: Rebirth, and variant covers for the Green Lantern and DC Comics event, The Blackest Night.

Gabe Eltaeb

Gabe EltaebWS LogoGabe Eltaeb was born in 1978 in the same hometown as Jonah Hex; Greeley, Colorado. When he was little he would spend most of the day drawing in the kitchen of his Grandparent's Mexican restaurant on long sheets of butcher paper.

When he was 13 and living in San Diego, his friend Shawn Bandy showed him a copy of X-Men issue one Illustrated by Jim Lee and Scott W illiams. It had the Beast Vaulting over a rock and Storm flying close behind him along with many other X-Men launching an attack on the Nefarious Magneto.  Gabe was awestruck when he saw this. He didn't know illustrations could be this good. He decided then and there that this is what he would do with his life.

1000's of comics, a college degree, a marriage and two kids later in 2004 a chance Meeting with Nexus creator Mike Baron in a Colorado Comic Book store landed Gabe his first illustration job penciling the final issue of the Detonator from Image Comics.

Gabe was hired to work in the WildStorm Coloring Department in late 2007 and now works for Jim Lee, the very man who inspired him to get in the business in the first place.

You may have seen his work on such titles as Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, The Authority, Gen 13 and many more. Gabe also inked his first story for DC Comics this fall in the DC Holiday Special.

Gabe lives in San Diego with the woman of his dreams two kids and a lazy dog named Speedy.

Georges Jeanty

Georges Jeanty

After majoring in the Fine Arts , at Miami-dade University, he considered a career in acting, but decided to use his artistic talent to pursue a career as a commercial artist.

Inspired by the comics he read as a kid- superhero icons like Luke Cage and Blade- he made comic books his focus. His artist influences includes John Bryne, Michael Golden, Alan Davis, and others.

His first break in comics was Paradigm #1 (1994) published by Caliber Comics. Soon after, he worked on some of the bad girl books at London Night Studios. Laying his artistic hands on various London Night characters such as Poizon, Stryke and Razor, he was, consequently, arrested, arraigned and acquitted. This led to his work with other underground comic publishers, plus a stint as a resident artist at Gaijin Studios.

And what a call! Georges was asked to audition for, and later offered, the monthly comic Bishop: the Last X-man. His earlier Marvel work also included a Gambit mini-series (also an X-man) and Deadpool- the “merc with a mouth” who is not an X-man, but still a mutant! After receiving rave reviews for his stint on Deadpool, Georges continued his mutant-mania with Weapon X and another Gambit project-this time as an ongoing monthly comic series.

In addition to being an incredibly charming artist, Georges is a man of many hats- adventurer, scholar, Prince officianonto, sometimes table dancer, and all around nice guy. But above all these talents "Comic Artist" best fits our man of mirth, mystery and intrigue!

Jonnie Allan

Independent Comics creator and self-taught artist Jonnie Allan founded a.k.a Comics as a vehicle to introduce his debut creation The Miscellaneous Adventures of STYKMAN™ to the comic book world. In February 2006 a.k.a. Comics began distributing The Miscellaneous Adventures of STYKMAN™ direct to fans and retailers selling out at almost every convention appearance. Through a "grass-roots" approach to marketing a.k.a. Comics was able to catch the attention of Diamond Comics Distributors, Inc. by gaining critical acclaim for the comics and selling out at most conventions.

In February of 2007 Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. began distributing STYKMAN. Due to the fact that most retailers opted not to deal directly with a.k.a. Comics and carry STYKMAN, something we completely understand, Diamond will begin distributing with issue #1. The comics will distributed every other month until 2008 where it is the goal of a.k.a. Comics to bring you The Miscellaneous Adventures of STYKMAN™ on a 4-6 week basis.

Present day.  The gloves are off, the pencil is flying, and The Miscellaneous Adventures of STYKMAN™ is available in a comics shop near you.

Laurie Breitkreuz

Laurie Breitkruez

Once upon a time, Disney aired a documentary about Feature Animation. I was shocked to discover that Goofy was not a real actor in some 2-dimensional world too expensive for our family to travel to on summer vacation. Still, I watched in awe as the animators flipped pages at their desk and made their drawings move. Sheer magic. It was at that moment that I knew I wanted to be an animator. I was 12 years old.

I always loved to draw, and have been drawing for longer than I can remember, but growing up on a farm in Alberta, Canada, I was a long way off from my career goals. There wasn't anyone I could ask about it or job shadow for a day, no books at the library, and certainly no studios even remotely close by. I owned a single animated film on VHS - a copy of Disney's Robin Hood - so I began there, freeze-framing through it all, and filling my sketchbook.

After I finished high school I began searching more aggressively for a career in the animation industry. Every lead told me that a 2-year foundation in the arts was the first step. I enrolled at Red Deer College in the Fine Arts Program and began to develop a more sophisticated skill-set, all the while researching and honing my cartooning and animation skills. In 1996, after 2 years of study, I had earned my diploma, but I enjoyed the education experience so much that I studied for a 3rd year! Life Drawing was indispensable as was Art History, and I excelled at Sculpture. I was headed toward a BFA, and it was a blast...But it wasn't animation.

Nearing the end of 3rd year, I discovered a new multimedia/animation school opening in Calgary and enrolled right away. Unfortunately, it didn't teach me much of anything that I hadn't already taught myself in my own self-studies. It did, however, land me an internship with a local graphic design company. It was while working there that I met Kandrix Foong, the man I would marry, and the rest, as they say, is history! Or at very least, history in the making! Within the year, we had both parted from that company and formed our own - KONsequential Studios - in 2001. We co-created and produced the 8-issue comic book mini-series A Monk's Tale and began traveling the comic convention circuit, exhibiting and networking. Throughout the duration of producing the mini-series, I freelanced; teaching art and animation fundamentals. Over the course of the next 7 years I found myself instructing in a range of settings, from government-funded community programs to independent filmmakers' organizations to university campuses.

As A Monk's Tale wrapped up, we were searching for the next idea to develop. In 2008, I launched "Pure Heroine" - a compilation of various female characters as pinup models. The title quickly gained a large fan base, and continues to grow! Kandrix began managing my career which led to a variety of new opportunities, gigs, and collaborations with other creators and studios. Included on the roster of clients are Top Cow Productions, Paul Dini's "Dini Cartoons", Nickelodeon and Topps Trading Cards, as well as numerous others that remain in development.

I currently work from home, freelancing on both industry and independent properties as well as traveling the convention circuit. We continue to call Calgary home.

Michael Newman

Michael NewmanMichael's love of superhero movies began at the age of 8, when he saw the first full page newspaper ad for the 1978 Christopher Reeve Superman Film. He ran into the next room to excitedly tell his parents "You will believe a man can fly!"

Michael began going to conventions at the age of 10, his parents took him to his first, HoustonCon 1980, they’ve never been to another convention since, he’s never stopped going.  He began volunteering at conventions at the age of 12, and his love of fandom and superhero movies has never stopped.  Michael wrote his first college paper for film school on the process to get the 1989 Batman film made, quoting such luminaries as Starlog editor David McDonnell and publicists Jeff Walker and Terry Erdmann.

While volunteering for the local Denver Sci-Fi Convention, Starfest, Michael had the opportunity to take over one of the video rooms and turn it into Superhero Cinema, one of the only (possibly the only) convention video rooms dedicated to 3 full days of Superhero Movies and TV shows.
Now he runs the video room, and a website devoted to superhero movie news, with a podcast, as well as speaking at conventions showing movie trailers and covering superhero movie news.

Mike Carlin

Mike CarlinMike Carlin is Senior Group Editor at DC Comics supervising the production of DC's JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA line of titles. These include JSA, JSA ALL-STARS, POWER GIRL, MAGOG, and the newest history of the DC Universe LEGACIES.

From 1993 to 2003, Mike was Executive Editor of the DC Universe of comic book characters (including the globally recognized icons SUPERMAN, BATMAN, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN and FLASH) for DC Comics.  Desiring to get back to the more creative side of the process Mike made the unusual move back to hands-on editing.

Mike attended the High School of Art and Design, where in 1974 he participated in an intern program with the same DC Comics-- a program which ended, coincidentally enough, after Mike's checkered performance.  Subsequently Mike studied Cartooning with Harvey Kurtzman and Will Eisner at New York's School of Visual Arts.

Fresh out of college in 1980, Mike began his professional comics career writing and drawing "Mike Carlin's Page O' Stuff" and "The Dirk McGirk Reports" for Marvel Comics' Crazy Magazine. Mike, on his best behavior in the hallowed halls of Marvel, was tapped for an Assistant Editorial position in early 1982 by Mark Gruenwald. Two years later Mike was promoted to full Editor and handed Captain America  and Fantastic Four  to supervise. While at Marvel Mike wrote Captain America, Ka-Zar  and The Thing.

Having missed the memos regarding Mike's internship over a decade earlier, Dick Giordano hired Mike to work with John Byrne and Andy Helfer on the relaunch of the SUPERMAN titles for DC Comics in 1986. Six years later Mike had successfully helped build the SUPERMAN line into the best selling phenomenon it remains today with the infamous"Death and Return of Superman” storyline. Mike has also written STAR TREK, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, THE FLINTSONES & THE JETSONS and the METAL MEN for DC.

Mike was co-writer, with Andy Helfer, of fifteen teleplays for the syndicated SUPERBOY television series as well.

Mike has also written and drawn his own comic called RATMAN 2000 (Slave Labor Graphics), which his mother insists he apologizes for. Mike apologizes here and now.

Sterling Gates

Sterling_GatesSterling Gates was a comic fan from a young age. His father owned a comic book store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and remembered that, "We had a garage full of comics for as long as I could remember and I would sit and read them for hours, then sneak them under the covers and read them in bed." When he started college, he also worked part-time in a local comic shop.

Gates told a back-up story about Sinestro Corps member Kryb with artist Jerry Ordway in Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman Prime. He went on to write a two-part story about Alpha Lantern Boodikka in Green Lantern Corps #21-22. He then took over full writing duties of the current Supergirl title, starting with issue #34, in October 2008.Gates' involvement in that title places him as a writer for the Superman: New Krypton story arc.

Recent projects include the "Prometheus" Faces of Evil one-shot with artist Federico Dallocchio.

Tim Bradstreet

Tim BradstreetTim Bradstreet ArtEisner Award nominated Illustrator Timothy Bradstreet was born February 16, 1967 in Cheverly, Maryland. Primarily a self-taught illustrator, he has been working professionally since graduating from high school in 1985. Forgoing institutional art training, Tim joined Fantasmagraphics in 1986, where he worked for two years under the guidance of early mentor, Steve Venters. During this time, Bradstreet began illustrating role-playing games, honing his skills while pursuing a lifelong ambition to break into the comics industry. In 1990 he hit the ground running with industry legend Tim Truman on the serialized graphic taleDragon Chiang, and he never looked back.

Over the ensuing 22 years Tim Bradstreet has illustrated everything from RPGs, trading cards, and comic books, to book covers, album sleeve art, and movie posters. He began his career illustrating role-playing games with GDW’s Twilight 2000, and FASA’s Shadowrun. Tim's ground-breaking work on White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade established him as a critical and pop-culture favorite, and it wasn’t long before he began illustrating for major comic publishers. Tim has since exercised his skills freelancing for hundreds of comic, game, and film related projects including Activision’s Vampire: Bloodlines VG,Dark Horse’s Hard Looks, and Another Chance To Get It Right (With author Andrew Vachss), Star WarsXComics Greatest World, and Criminal Macabre – Clive Barker’s Age Of Desire, Marvel’s The Punisher and Blade, Vertigo’s GanglandUnknown SoldierHuman Target, and Hellblazer. In 1997 Tim was voted Best Artist by the Horror Writers Guild Of America. In 2000 Tim joined film director Guillermo del Toro as a conceptual artist to help realize the film Blade II. In the fall of 2003 Tim began work on a string of movie posters for the Marvel/Lion’s Gate film, The Punisher; a rare opportunity to influence the film incarnation of a character he so deftly impacted in comics. Bradstreet is now realizing a long time dream to work in film as a conceptual artist, production designer and producer, counting directors Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Mist), Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Nightbreed), and Jonathan Hensleigh (The Punisher) among his many artistic admirers.

In 2007 Tim entered new territory as a production designer for the 3D gothic horror film Dark Country, starring and directed by RAW Entertainment partner Thomas Jane. Also with Thomas Jane andSteve Niles, Bradstreet co-created the sci-fi-horror comic series Bad Planet.

Bradstreet recently ended a long association as cover artist for two major comic franchises, Marvel’s The Punisher, and DC/Vertigo's John Constantine: Hellblazer.

Combined, he has contributed over 180 covers to those titles over the last 10 years and has left an indelible mark on both characters while simultaneously re-establishing them for a new generation. Tim begins a new chapter as a cover artist bringing his dark vision to Steve Niles’ Criminal Macabre, and exploring new directions with Rogue Angel, an ongoing series of novels. In 2010, he contributed over 50 illustrations for Robert E. Howard’s El Borak and Other Desert Adventures for Del Rey. Bradstreet is currently working on a novelization of his long-awaited magnum opus, Red Sky Diary.

The novel will also be available in a heavily illustrated oversized edition. Tim, wife Missy, and daughter Lydia reside in San Diego California.

Todd McFarlane

Todd McFarlaneTodd will be at Phoenix Comicon on Saturday and Sunday.

From budding baseball player to comic book artist extraordinaire to family man, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has a wealth of experience in the world of entertainment.

Born in Canada in 1961, McFarlane's road trip to creative autonomy began when he accepted an assignment pencilling for Marvel/Epic Comics in March 1984. From there, he worked his way to the top of the talent roster before leaving Marvel to help found Image Comics with six other artists.

It was then that Todd introduced his own character, Spawn. The book's debut in 1992 sold an amazing 1.7 million copies, an unprecedented feat in independent comics. From there came a whirlwind of growth and expansion: more comics, action figures, film, animation and the Web.

In 1994, Todd founded McFarlane Toys, because he wanted to maintain maximum creative control over his Spawn character. Over the years, the company has become one of the largest, most renowned toy manufacturers in the world. In addition to Spawn, McFarlane Toys has produced figures from such properties as KISS, Shrek, X-Files, Austin Powers, Metal Gear Solid, Clive Barker, Akira, the Beatles, Army of Darkness, Jaws, Rob Zombie, Alien, Predator, AC/DC and dozens of others.

Todd still has a passion for sports - he grew up wanting to be a professional baseball player -- but the fact that McFarlane Toys currently has the official rights to produce action figures of professional football, baseball, hockey and basketball players helps scratch that itch. McFarlane also had a minority interest in the ownership of the Edmonton Oilers hockey club and owns the McFarlane Collection of home run baseballs from the 1998 Mark McGwire-Sammy Sosa race, including McGwire's $3 million #70 ball.

Today, McFarlane, his wife, Wanda, and their three children reside in Arizona, where Todd maintains a happily hectic balance between his family and all his interests (sports, film, comics, action figures).

Todd Nauck

Todd NauckartTodd Nauck is an American comic book artist and writer. Nauck is most notable for his work on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Young Justice and his own creation, Wildguard.

Nauck's first assignment from Marvel Comics drawing the back cover of What The--?!

In early 1994, Todd was hired by Rob Liefeld 's Extreme Studios of Image Comics when a friend from art school showed his WildGuard work to Dan Fraga at a comic book convention who in turn showed it to Liefield. Nauck went on to draw such series as Badrock and Co., New Men, New Force, Supreme, Youngblood and Team Youngblood. By 1997, Nauck began work with DC Comics. After drawing several Legion of Superheroes stories, he helped launch the Young Justice series with writer Peter David. Nauck drew 53 issues of the 55 issue run of the series, including three double-sized issues and a portion of the Young Justice/Spyboy crossover mini-series.

Nauck published his creator-owned series, Wildguard, with Image Comics. The series was patterned after a reality television show competition, in which various wannabe superheroes competed for a spot on a new superhero team, and judged by a panel of judges, as on the television series American Idol.

Nauck's other work includes Teen Titans (Volume 3) #32-33, Teen Titans Go!, and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #11-13 and 17-23.

Nauck was the artist of the much-publicized five-page back-up story that appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #538, which was published in January 2009, and featured a cameo appearance by then-President-elect Barack Obama.

Tony DiGerolamo

Tony DiGerolamoTony DiGerolamo began his comics career in 1996 with the publication of his first comic book, Jersey Devil #1, based on the Jersey Devil legend. It was published under his own imprint, South Jersey Rebellion Productions. Pencilled largely by Steven Cornicelli and inked by Bob Clark, Jersey Devil #1 enjoyed modest sales. Replacing the art team, DiGerolamo recruited Dom LaGrutta, Jr. for the pencils and Donn Smith for the inks, giving Jersey Devil #2 a cleaner look. Although the improvements continued to bring DiGerolamo and the SJRP strong local sales, comic fans largely ignored the comic. DiGerolamo's insistence on longer issues and multi-issue stories put a strain on his art team and forced him to recruit additional artists.

Around 1999, DiGerolamo launched what would become a more successful comic book, The Travelers which was eventually picked up by Kenzer and Company at issue #4. With the changes of art teams, Jersey Devil was dropped by Diamond Distributors after issue #7 due to low sales. DiGerolamo struggled to keep the comic alive publishing issues 8 thru 12 in mini-comic formats.

Now relieved of the financial burden of publication, DiGerolamo concentrated more on making the Travelers a success. The bimonthly schedule put a strain on artist Brian Dawson and the variety of inkers on the book which included the Fraim Brothers. DiGerolamo also launched a 4-issue mini-series called The Fix to coincide with a novel with the same character.

By issue 9, Dawson could no longer commit to The Travelers hectic schedule, so inker James Dunn took over the art chores for issues 10 and 11. Eventually, DiGerolamo found a new artist with Chris Moreno on the Travelers #12. Sales peaked with the Travelers during issue #14, which was a crossover with Knights of the Dinner Table Illustrated. Shortly thereafter, he took over the writing chores for another Kenzer comic called Everknights. DiGerolamo moved The Travelers to Wingnut Games with issue #21. By issue 22, Moreno could no longer keep doing the Travelers with his other comic work. DiGerolamo struggled with a series of other artists with Moreno occasionally coming back to help with the art. The comic limped to the 25th issue before Wingnut had to cancel it.

By this time, DiGerolamo had landed side work with Bongo Comics writing for the Bart Simpson comics. His first story was a Lisa story entitled "A Chair of One's Own" in November 2002. While he continued to write for Bongo, he met the publishers at Silent Devil. Looking for another project that both he and Moreno could work on, the duo launched the Super Frat webcomic under Silent Devil's banner. In 2006, Silent Devil published its first compilation of Super Frat called Super Frat: Rush Week Collection.

DiGerolamo continues to writer screenplays and comic books in New Jersey. He is also the creator of Complete Mafia for d20 from Living Room Games. His current project is an online zombie TV show called Zombie Country.
